True value

How many older people do you know that end their lives bitter and frustrated. To be able to be happy and move through life with wisdom, understanding, gratitude and love while still achieving success in all respects is what I have started to develop in my work in Hermetic Philosophy.

June 2006

Words cannot do justice to what I have gotten from the Dario Salas Institute of Hermetic Philosophy. I can only relate it through feelings. No value can be placed on the magic that has occurred inside myself through practicing these teachings.

  • How can one put a value on resolving a tortured relationship with my father who is no longer alive?
  • How can one put a value on breaking through a wall of defenses that kept oneself closed off from his friends, his brother, his mother and father, his wife – relating on only superficial and meaningless levels?
  • How can one put a value on having self-esteem; having self-esteem when for years one's mind was filled with doubt, self-criticism and violent self-rebuke and self-loathing?
  • How can one put a value on learning how to have honor, courage, discipline and commitment?
  • How can one put a value on being able to truly connect and see another human being for who they really are, free from the judgments imposed upon us by culture, education and society – in such a way that people feel only comfort and love from oneself?
  • How can one put a value on being able to just experience joy in a given moment free of anxieties and worries that come from outside demands?
  • How can one put a value on breaking free from fears to express how you really feel and touch others deeply?
  • How can one put a value on the incredible lightness of being and depth of feeling and perception experienced after a run in the morning at sunrise with a group of like-minded brothers with impersonal purpose?
  • How can one put a value on being able to perceive the true beauty of a woman, beyond superficial appearances? How can one put a value on the joy that comes from giving another human being a chance to share these things for him or herself – to give without investment and manipulation – only to help another human being?

I am talking about real experiences that I often have and the other members of this School have as a result of working on themselves. These are experiences that come from cultivating all the virtues that human beings possess. These virtues I had inside myself but I had to discover them. I had to move through all my insecurities, anger, laziness, envy, vanity, narcissism, selfishness, greed, dishonesty and above all fear. Behind all these faults lie our virtues. The value of virtues can only be experienced.

When I was absorbed in all these faults and dominated by them, I was so blinded, so weighed down. Joy was so fleeting and needed to be fed constantly from the outside. Now I feed myself. I cannot do it all the time and I still have much more work to do. But I know I have something that transcends any amount of money, prestige, flattery, or any appetite. It is a feeling of happiness, of profound appreciation for everyone and everything, a profound thankfulness and love.

This feeling cannot be captured in words. It can only be experienced. I find it amazing to see how many years people work in search of this kind of feeling outside of themselves through money, power, prestige etc. How many people do you know that seem to have it all and yet seem so unhappy? How many older people do you know that end their lives bitter and frustrated. To be able to be happy and move through life with wisdom, understanding, gratitude and love while still achieving success in all respects is what I have started to develop in my work in Hermetic Philosophy. There are not many places that I know that one can learn to have these things. Thankfully, I found one.
